Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Guitar Lessons Belfast teach beginners?

Yes. I would be delighted to help you to learn to play the guitar if you are a beginner student. Indeed, I have a lot of experience in teaching students who are beginners, helping them to learn the "foundation" knowledge needed to play the guitar. This includes an understanding of open chords, basic bar chords and simply lead guitar melodies.

A combination of these three elements, combined with an understanding of strumming, alternate picking and palm-muting, forms much of the foundation course of lessons - helping students who complete this to be able to play many hundreds of popular rock, pop and alternative songs.

Can you teach my children to learn to play the guitar?

Unfortunately, I am able to teach students from the age of 16 upwards at the moment.

Where are the lessons located?

I am a mobile guitar teacher, so can travel to my students across Belfast (subject to my teaching schedule and availability). My students really enjoy this aspect of my guitar lessons as it means that they can learn to play the guitar in the comfort of their own home, without having to travel for their lessons.

Additionally, for those who are interested in taking lessons at my teaching space I can offer lessons in Aghalee. For more information about this simply get in touch.

Can I learn to play the guitar if I am left-handed?

A question we are asked surprisingly often. Absolutely, some of the best guitarists of all time were left-handed - Jimmy Hendrix being one, Kurt Cobain being another - so you are in good company if you are left-handed.

Do I need to know how to read music?

Luckily you do not need to learn how to read "traditional" music notation to be able to play the guitar at a high level. However, you do need to be able to read and understand guitar tablature, which is a simplified version of music notation specifically made for the guitar. It is easy to learn and I would be happy to teach you how to read it.

How long does it take to learn to play the guitar?

This is a question again we are often asked, the answer depends on a student's aim. If you wish to learn to play the guitar to sing along with that is something that can be achieved by a complete beginner in 12 months with hard work. If you want to be a lead guitarist in a covers band then 24 months is more likely, similar for students interested in writing their own complex guitar riffs and songs. Though the truth is that you never stop learning guitar and both myself and Antoni continue to learn new things on the guitar.
